Why do I feel alone?

Feeling lonely is very common for many people after their brother or sister dies.

There are many reasons why you might feel lonely. It’s important to remember that there are people out there who can help and do want to listen to how you’re feeling.

You might feel like nobody else can relate to what you're feeling.

While those around you may not understand your exact feelings, close friends will often be supportive and listen to you.

If you don’t want to speak to friends, try chatting to a school counsellor, teacher or trusted adult. There are charities across the country in our ‘get support’ section that can also help.

You’ll see that there are others who understand what it is like having a brother or sister die on our website. In our stories section we share others experiences and their advice.

Perhaps you feel more lonely without your brother or sister around. Adjusting to life without your sibling can be extremely difficult.

Some people find doing something in memory of their sibling, like a personal challenge or a fundraising event, keeps that connection.

James’ little sister Chloe died from cancer aged 10. James has found a way of adjusting to life without Chloe. When going on holiday he paints rocks in her memory then leaves them where he goes, so there’s always a bit of Chloe enjoying the adventure with him. If you’re ever feeling particularly lonely, write down when and why, then when you’re ready share those feelings with an adult.

Simple things, like joining a nearby sports club or catching up with people, can also reduce our feelings of loneliness.
